It is believed that the first inhabitants came to the southern end of the peninsula thousands of years ago. And when the first Europeans arrived, only nomadic Pericus survived on the gathering of fruit, seeds, roots, and shellfish, as well as hunting and fishing.

The Spanish Intervention

The history tells us that the first Europeans to reach the coasts of Cabo San Lucas were Hernan Cortes, in 1535, and Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, in 1542. But it was until March, 1602 that the Viceroy Count of Monterrey, Gaspar Zuńiga y Acevedo, assigned General Sebastian Vizcaino to lead an exploration of the coast of California mainly searching for ports of refuge for the galleons of Manila. Three ships, called the San Diego, the Santo Tomas, and the Tres Reyes sailed from the port of Acapulco north to the cape at Mendocino. And in the crew was the Carmelite monk Antonio de la Ascencion, who named the place Cabo San Lucas in honor to Saint Luke. He also made very accurate maps and prepared courses and journals describing the coast, which were used for navigating the site until the end of the 18th century.

Cabo San Lucas, already being a village, didn’t begin to develop in the field until the 1920’s. When an American company that built a floating platform to catch tuna, also founded the Company of Marine Products, it gave an important stimulus to the village.

• January 8, 2007: All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document (MMDs).

• January 1, 2008: All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.
